Sep/02 Sunny Days Ahead for Nintendo For the first time ever, the video game industry will surpass $1 billion in Canadian retail sales, and once again Fleming Design was asked to help our long-time client Nintendo of Canada lead the charge by developing a full suite of point-of-purchase and advertising materials for the release of the much anticipated game, Super Mario Sunshine for Nintendo GameCube.
In keeping with the supercharged industry race to get the latest 'must have' video games to the store shelves, we were tasked with developing the concept, designing all the materials, and delivering finished pieces - all within three weeks! Working with no more than the logo and Mario himself, we met our project schedule, and Super Mario Sunshine went on to surpass 40,000 games sold in its first week on the market -- anticipated to be the best selling video game this year in Canada.
The campaign showcases our hero Mario and his great new water toy, the FLUDD, which he uses to clean up the toxic sludge polluting the island where he's vacationing with Princess Peach and Toad. Fleming began by designing a tropical beach environment as the backdrop for our design concepts to capture the look and feel of Mario's watery adventure. Point of purchase materials were then designed in English and French including cling decals, danglers, floor decals, postcards, posters, and more. These were featured in major retail outlets such as Toys 'R' Us, Walmart, Futureshop, and Electronics Boutique. Advertising materials included magazine ads, as well as banners up to 31' wide and 33' high displayed in shopping malls in every major city across Canada.
